Deadline closes for provisional list of nominations by Members of the Oireachtas for Seanad Elections

The Seanad is comprised of 60 members, 11 of which are nominated by An Taoiseach. The remaining 49 seats are contested in a general election – 43 seats by way of an election for panel members with members of the Dáil, the outgoing Seanad, and members of city and county councils qualified to vote and 6 seats by way of an election for university members.

For Panel Members:

• The period for nominations by Nominating Bodies expired at noon on Friday 11 March 2011.
• The period for nominations by members of the Oireachtas expired at noon today, Monday 21 March 2011.
• The Seanad Returning Officer will sit for the completion of the panels on Friday 25 March 2011.
• The ballot papers will be issued to the electorate on Thursday 7 April 2011
• The poll will close at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday 26 April 2011 and the count will commence immediately thereafter.

The sequence in which the count takes place is:

Cultural and educational panel;
Agricultural Panel;
Labour Panel;
Industrial and Commercial Panel;
Administrative Panel.
