Pat Breen, TD elected Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade

22 Meith 2011, 16:08

Pat Breen, TD has been elected Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Speaking after his election, Deputy Breen said: “I’m delighted to have been elected Chairman. It is a privilege to chair a Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs has a major role to play in promoting Ireland’s interests in a rapidly changing world and an increasingly globalised economy. The recent successful visits by Queen Elizabeth II and US President Barack Obama are reminders of the importance of maintaining a strong international standing and reputation.

I look forward to working with all of my colleagues on the Joint Committee in helping to further key foreign policy priorities including the fight against hunger, the promotion of human rights and a strong EU. The Joint Committee will also have an important remit in helping to promote trade in existing and new markets and supporting Ireland as a destination for foreign direct investment.”

Bernard Durkan, TD was elected Vice-Chairman of the Committee.

The Committee also discussed a schedule for future meetings.
