Ceann Comhairle to attend National Day of Commemoration

8 Iúil 2011, 17:37

Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett, TD will attend the National Day of Commemoration at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Sunday, 10th July.

Deputy Barrett said:

“The National Day of Commemoration commemorates all Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations. It is fitting that we honour our war dead. Irish men and women have a proud history of serving with distinction and it is important that we set aside a day to remember the sacrifices that they have made. Since 1958, the Defence Forces have had a continuous presence on peace support operations and to date 85 members of the Defence Forces have given their lives in the cause of world peace. Last month members of the Defence Forces left for peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. We should never forget the bravery and dedication of all of our service men and women, past and present.”
