Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture invites Director General to discuss RTÉ policy

22 Samh 2011, 18:29

The Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will invite Noel Curran, Director General of RTÉ, and Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, to address the committee in response to recent concerns around investigative journalism at the station.

The committee believes that the policy issues raised by the Fr Kevin Reynolds libel settlement should be addressed as soon as possible.

While the committee’s terms of reference prevent an enquiry or detailed investigation, the committee intends to engage RTÉ on the implications for policy matters in the aftermath of the case.

It is anticipated that the meeting will take place in the coming weeks. Furthermore, a more general discussion on the broader policy issues at the State broadcaster, involving the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, RTÉ and the BAI, will take place in the New Year.
