Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture to discuss energy saving proposals

6 Noll 2011, 15:02

Members of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will scrutinise EU energy legislation with officials from the Department of Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources tomorrow Wednesday 7 Decemeber at 11.30a.m.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman, Andrew Doyle, TD said: “The Committee Members are tasked with determining Ireland’s approach to European Union energy policy and legislation and this EU proposal sets out an impetus for energy efficiency Union-wide.

“Member States have set a target of achieving 20 percent energy savings by 2020 for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. However, the Commission’s latest estimations are that EU will achieve only half that target. The Committee looks forward to scrutinising the European Commission’s proposals to make certain aspects of the plan to reach the 2020 target binding. We intend to consider with Department officials the thrust of the Commission’s proposals, and the implications for Ireland.”

Later tomorrow, at 2:30p.m., the Select Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will meet separately to discuss the Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill with Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte, TD.

Deputy Doyle said: “The Select Committee looks forward to parsing this Bill, which includes provisions to promote energy efficiency and safety of energy supply, with Minister Rabbitte.”

Both meetings will take place tomorrow in Committee Room 1 in Leinster House 2000.
