Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss Government’s climate change priorities with Environment Minister

14 Noll 2011, 14:37

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan TD will outline the Government’s climate change priorities to the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Thursday, 15th December.

Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “The Committee has invited Minister Hogan to a meeting to spell out and clarify his position on climate change legislation. In October, the Minister announced that he would engage in a process of further study, public consultation and the promotion of carbon emissions mitigation schemes before any climate change legislation is introduced. This has led to uncertainty with regard to when a climate change bill will be published and presented before the Dáil.

We’re looking forward to meeting with the Minister so that he can outline in detail his climate change policy, run through his future plans for climate change legislation that would allow Ireland to meeting its 2020 targets and shed light on his timetable for that legislation.

The Minister will also address the Committee ahead of the forthcoming European Environment Council meeting and we appreciate his appearance before the Committee to brief members on the Council agenda items. Oireachtas Committees play a key role in ensuring that EU legislation, proposals and policies are properly scrutinised and examined.”

The meeting with Minister Hogan will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 2.45pm, Thursday, 15th December.

Earlier in the day, at 9.30am the committee will meet with Chairman Designate of Drogheda Port Company, Denis Moynihan, and Chairman Designate of Shannon Foynes Port Company, Michael Collins.

Deputy Lynch said: “As part of the Oireachtas scrutiny process, we will have an opportunity to question both chairmen designate on their plans and key priorities for both port companies, as well as presenting them with an opportunity to outline the key issues and concerns for both companies.”
