EU Affairs Committee to discuss European Council outcomes

14 Noll 2011, 16:51

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meets with Geraldine Byrne-Nason, Second Secretary at the Department of the Taoiseach, tomorrow morning Thursday 15 December to discuss the outcomes of the December European Council.

Committee Chairman Joe Costello TD says: “The Committee looks forward to discussing the new fiscal compact agreed at last week’s summit with Ms Byrne-Nason, a leading official in the Irish delegation.”

“The goal of the compact, as a response to the current crisis, is to strengthen fiscal discipline and introduce more automatic sanctions and stricter surveillance. As has been widely flagged, all EU Member States apart from the UK have said they were considering participating.”

“The Committee wishes to explore with Ms Byrne-Nason the implications for Ireland flowing from these efforts to stem the euro crisis, including the proposed legal requirement that the structural deficit should not exceed 0.5% of nominal GDP.”

Also addressing the Committee tomorrow will be representatives from the Irish Business and Employers Confederation, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association and the Small Firms Association. They will present on the European Commission’s recent Communication A Roadmap to Stability and Growth.

Deputy Costello continues: “We look forward to hearing the perspective of Irish business on what is the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade.

“We intend to focus the discussion tomorrow on one of the Commission’s action points - frontloading stability and growth enhancing policies through making the EU decision-making process more efficient.

“In the midst of economic uncertainty within the Union, it is opportune to seek the advice of Irish business leaders on the Commission’s intentions to minimise barriers to free movement of money, services and people.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow morning 15 December at 10 a.m. in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.
