Agriculture Committee to meet Animal Health Ireland

16 Ean 2012, 16:14

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will tomorrow meet with Animal Health Ireland (AHI) to discuss its current work priorities.

AHI was founded in 2009 and aims to be a world class resource for Irish farmers and the agri-food industry. The organisation will also present its annual report for 2010 at the meeting.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “Food producers have been among our best export performers in the economic downturn and will play a key role in our national recovery. Animal Health Ireland has quickly established itself on the front line of enhancing the value and competitiveness of Irish products in the global marketplace.

“AHI as an industry-led, not-for-profit partnership between livestock producers, processors, animal health advisers and government has a critical role to play in sustaining and bolstering Ireland’s enviable reputation for safe food.

“The Committee Members look forward to engaging with this independent, science-based organisation, which gives Irish livestock farmers and the associated industry access to international best practice in herd health.”

At tomorrow’s meeting the Committee will also scrutinise a number of EU legislative proposals on genetically modified crops.

The meeting takes place tomorrow 17 January in Committee Room 3, LH 2000, at 1:30 pm.
