Justice Committee to consider undocumented migrants in Ireland

24 Feabh 2015, 16:22

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will tomorrow hear from the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) to consider the difficulties facing undocumented migrants living in Ireland.

24 February 2015

The MRCI representatives will outline their work with undocumented migrants for over 14 years – estimated at over 20,000 in Ireland - and are expected to outline how a scheme to regularise their lives here might be put in place.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD says: “We look forward to our meeting tomorrow with representatives from the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, the national organisation working to promote justice, empowerment and equality for migrant workers and their families. There are between 20,000 and 26,000 undocumented migrants, including children and families, many of whom have been living in Ireland for years. At our meeting tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to consider the latest MRCI statistics and hear about the issues and concerns of undocumented migrants living here.”

The meeting commences tomorrow Wednesday 25 February at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 and can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
