10 Meith 2015, 12:37

The on-going negotiations on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP) between the EU and the US is on the agenda for when the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meets tomorrow.

10th June 2015

The Committee will receive an update on the negotiations, including on the Investor-State Dispute Settlement Mechanism.

Addressing the Committee tomorrow will be:

•    Brian Cotter, American Chamber of Commerce Ireland;
•    Colin Brown, European Commission, DG Trade, Dispute Settlement and Legal Aspects of Trade Policy;
•    Tom Healy, Director, Nevin Economic Research Institute;
•    Mark O’ Mahoney, Chambers Ireland;
•    Patricia King, General Secretary, Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, said: “The Committee is pleased to continue its engagement on the TTIP negotiations. The proposed EU-US trade deal is one that would have significant implications on Ireland’s open economy. For that reason, the Committee maintains a close interest in the ongoing talks. At tomorrow’s meeting, we will hear from a number of organisations who will inform us as to the progress of the negotiations.”

“We will also be discussing the Investor-State Dispute Settlement Mechanism, a topic our Members are particularly interested in. The Investor-State Dispute Settlement Mechanism has prompted much debate amongst the international community, some of whom question its inclusion in any future trade and investment deals. Our Committee will wish to assess the possible challenges as well as merits of the mechanism when we meet tomorrow.”

Tomorrow’s meeting will commence at 2pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Thursday, 11th June 2015.
