Transport Committee to discuss the future of public transport and the level of State subvention

4 DFómh 2016, 16:22

4 October 2016

The Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will tomorrow conduct a two-part meeting which will discuss a vision for public transport, including the level of State subvention. Session A will see the Committee meet with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, and Session B will see the Committee meet with representatives from the National Transport Authority, Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann.

Session A will commence at 9.00am in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 5 October 2016, with Session B expected to commence at 10.00am.

Committee Chairman Brendan Griffin TD, said “Tomorrow’s meeting will allow Committee Members to engage in a thorough discussion on what kind of a vision we want for the future of Ireland’s transport service and infrastructure. Our transport provision has received much attention over the last number of months but we must ensure that our service capacity is increased, across the regions, to cater for a growing population into the future. In this context, we will also look at how it will be funded with a particular emphasis on the level of State subvention.”

“With the announcement of Budget 2017 next week, this is an opportune moment to discuss the level and importance of State subvention to our transport industry. Tomorrow we will be able to hear from the Minister and those in receipt of the subvention across both sessions of our meetings. This format will lead to an enhanced discussion and will allow Members put their question to the parties concerned.”

The meeting will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV; Saorview Channel 22; Virgin Media Channel 207; Sky Channel 574; eir Vision Channel 504 and Vodafone Channel 201.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
