29 Samh 2016, 12:04

29 November 2016

The Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, to consider Committee Stage of the Road Traffic Bill 2016.

The meeting will commence at 9.30am in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 30 November 2016.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Griffin TD, said “The Road Traffic Bill 2016 seeks to expand upon existing legislation which addresses a number of issues and drug driving in particular. It proposes a number of other road traffic measures such as providing for the lowering of speed limits in residential areas and also the mutual recognition of driving disqualifications between Ireland and the UK.”

“Recent research has shown a worrying link between road traffic fatalities and the prevalence of illegal drugs. It is a matter that must be addressed and this piece of legislation has, at its core, the aim to improving safety on Irish roads through tackling the influence of drugs on driving behaviour. The Committee welcome the opportunity to engage with Minister Ross on this important piece of legislation.”
