24 Ean 2017, 15:53

24 January 2017

The Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will meet tomorrow to examine the current financial situation at Bus Éireann, the future of the Expressway service and the importance of the Rural Transport Programme. The Committee will hear presentations from from Mr Ray Hernan, Acting CEO of Bus Éireann and Mr Seamus Boland, CEO of the Irish Rural Link.

The meeting will commence at 11.15am in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 January 2017.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Griffin TD, said “The provision of a suitable and effective public transport service is integral to a functioning economy that seeks growth across all of the regions of Ireland, not least in our rural towns and villages. Tomorrow the Committee will hold important discussions on the current financial situation at Bus Éireann, the future of the Expressway service and the vital role that the Rural Transport Programme plays in the lives of people around the country.”

“Commercial considerations must, of course, be taken into account but we must remember any restructuring of the Expressway routes that leads to a disruption of service would have a considerable effect on those that use and operate these routes. Members welcome the opportunity to engage fully with representatives of Bus Éireann and the Irish Rural Link with the aim of identifying the most important financial and social considerations and identifying a solution to any issue that may arise.”
