Irish water to appear before Housing Committee

14 Feabh 2017, 14:06

The Joint Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government will meet tomorrow to discuss the water supply project for the Eastern and Midlands region.

14 February 2017

Representatives from Irish Water will address the Committee.

The Water Supply Project – Eastern and Midlands Region (WSP) has been in development since the 1990s, originally under Dublin City Council as project sponsor, and under Irish Water’s management since January 2014. The project aims to address the future domestic and commercial demands for water in the Eastern and Midland Region of Ireland.

Committee Chairperson, Maria Bailey TD, said, \"There is a recognised need for a new source of water supply for the Eastern and Midlands Region. Research has indicated that the future domestic and commercial demand for water in the region will grow substantially by 2050. An extra 330 mega litres per day, which is the equivalent of 130 Olympic sized swimming pools will be required. Tomorrow, Irish Water will brief the Committee on their plans and the progress made to date on addressing this issue.\"

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 9:30am tomorrow, Wednesday, 15 February 2017.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
