Finance Committee to analyse customs, trade and tariffs in light of Brexit

24 Beal 2017, 13:32

The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 25 May at 10am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The Committee will engage on the impact of Brexit on matters relating to customs, trade and tariffs.

The following witnesses will address the Committee:

•    Mr. Niall Cody, Chairman, Office of the Revenue Commissioners;
•    Mr. Brian Keegan, Director of Public Policy and Tax, Chartered Accountants Ireland;
•    Ms. Carol Lynch, Partner, BDO Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman John McGuinness TD, said, “The EU customs union, of which Ireland is a part, is arguably the heart of the EU project. Ireland’s ability to access the huge UK market tariff-free post-Brexit will be a central theme for Committee consideration.”

“The issue of Northern Ireland’s place outside the customs union and the negative impact such an eventuality will have on the all-island economy is something we will discuss at our meeting tomorrow. Importing goods from the rest of the EU via the UK will be complicated by the UK decision to leave the EU and Irish exporters could also face additional UK tariff barriers. “

“The meeting also affords an opportunity for the Committee to review the various trade models and agreements that potentially may arise from future negotiations. Part of this scenario includes reverting to WTO rules which the Committee will want to explore in greater depth.”

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
