Impact of Brexit on North-South relations to be discussed at Seanad Committee meeting

24 Beal 2017, 11:19

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom meets tomorrow, Thursday, 25 May at 10.30am in the Seanad chamber.

The meeting will focus on the implications of the UK’s Withdrawal from the European Union for relations between the State and Northern Ireland.

The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

•    Session A: [Representatives from Border Communities Against Brexit]

•    Session B: [Dr. Duncan Morrow, Director of Community Engagement, Ulster University]

•    Session C: [Ms. Gina McIntyre, Chief Executive, Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)]

•    Session D: [Professor Christopher McCrudden, Professor of Human Rights and Equality Law, Queen’s University Belfast]

Committee Chairman, Senator Neale Richmond, said: “As we deal with the practicalities of Brexit, it is of utmost importance that the voices of affected communities in the North are heard. The uncertainties caused both by Brexit and the absence of a Northern Assembly means that there is a risk that the close ties between North and South could become weakened. Ongoing engagement is needed if we are to ensure that the progress we have made over the years is not lost. For this reason, our meeting tomorrow will be dedicated to discussing the impact on communities and how negatives can be mitigated. Committee members are likely to raise issue of a possible customs border as well as how he EU funded cross border programmes PEACE and INTERREG can be safeguarded.”
