Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht Committee to discuss Lower Lee Flood Relief Scheme

17 DFómh 2017, 10:02

The Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will discuss issues related to the Lower Lee (Cork City) Flood Relief Scheme at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 October, 2017.

Committee Cathaoirleach Peadar Tóibín TD said: “Given the long history of flooding in Cork City and the surrounding area, it is important that an integrated flood protection plan and flood defences are put in place. The OPW has published the Lower Lee (Cork City) Flood Relief Scheme, its plan to provide flood protection measures for the areas. The scheme will consist of flood defences along the River Lee downstream of Inniscarra dam and through Cork city, changes to the operating procedures for the Carrigadrohid and Inniscarra reservoirs for the purposes of flood risk management, as may be facilitated by the those flood defences, and a flood forecasting system to help guide decision-making on dam discharges and, if necessary, the erection of temporary or demountable defences downstream and in Cork City. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to discuss the scheme in greater detail, consider the measures that are being proposed and raise any issues or questions about the plan.”

This meeting will start at 1.30pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
