Justice & Equality Committee to discuss the Right to Die with Dignity

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said: “The issue of assisted dying is long-debated, highly controversial and frequently emotionally charged. Tomorrow, we will examine the issue in greater detail when we will hear from Right to Die Ireland which campaigns to legalise peaceful assisted dying; the Irish Association for Palliative Care an all-Ireland body which promotes palliative care nationally and internationally; and Professor Penney Lewis, an expert in medical law, who has written extensively on this area. We are looking forward to an open, balanced and informative debate on the matter of assisted dying when we will discuss the current Irish legal context, the reasons for seeking assisted death, the arguments in favour and against assisted dying and the legal situation and regulation in other jurisdictions.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 2 at 9.30 am on Wednesday, 22 November 2017.

Before this meeting takes place, the Committee will meet in Committee Room 2 at 9am to discuss further revised Estimates for the Public Services - Vote 24 with Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan TD.
