Justice & Equality Committee to discuss Garda homicide statistics

13 Feabh 2018, 15:57

Issues concerning Garda Homicide statistics will be on the agenda of the Joint Committee on Justice and Equality on Wednesday 14 February 2018 when it meets with representatives from An Garda Síochána.

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, TD, said: “Concerns have been raised about the accuracy of homicide figures recorded by An Garda Síochána. The Central Statistics Office is currently refusing to publish homicide figures due to questions over the information supplied by An Garda Síochána. This has the potential to damage the reputation of the police service, so it is important that we get clarity on this issue in order for the public to have confidence in An Garda Síochána. Tomorrow we will meet with representatives from An Garda Síochána to examine this issue in greater detail and discuss how the issue is being dealt with by An Garda Síochána.”

The meeting will take place at 10.30am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

Before the Joint Committee meets, the Select Committee will discuss the Intoxicating Liquor (Breweries and Distilleries) Bill 2016 [PMB] with the Minister for Justice and Equality at 9am in Committee Room 2.

This Bill provides for the grant of a licence authorising the sale of intoxicating liquor to visitors at breweries and distilleries and similar premises,
