Education Committee to focus on Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)

30 Aib 2018, 14:54

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills will meet tomorrow at 3.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The Committee will discuss the progress made to date on the Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) with the following witnesses:

• Representatives from National Parents' Council, Primary
• Representatives from Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI)
• Representatives from Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI)
• Representatives from National Council for Curriculum and Assessment(NCCA)
• Officials from Dept. of Education and Skills
• Representatives from National Parents; Council, Post-Primary (NPCpp)
• Representatives from Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO)
• Representatives from Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI)
• Representatives from Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU)

Committee Chair, Fiona O’Loughlin TD, said today, “The Committee has prioritised the Review of the RSE as part of its 2018 work programme due to the fact that this element of the curriculum is out of date and in many areas, no longer reflective of society today. The Committee believes that every student should be able to access information tin the programme that is relevant to them and that takes their unique needs into consideration. The Committee will engage with witnesses tomorrow on how the review is progressing and what measures are being put in place to ensure that teachers across the country are properly equipped to teach students about wellbeing, identity and respectful sexual behaviours. If students are to be supported appropriately, we must engage the views of teachers, who have an important role to play in supporting the rollout of the RSE.”
