Gaps in support for people with disabilities again in focus for 3 Joint Committees

11 Meith 2018, 11:17

Three Joint Committees of the Oireachtas will resume their examination Tuesday of the gaps in state-funded supports experienced by people with disabilities as they transition from education into employment.

Over the past month the three combined committees – the Joint Committees on Health, Education and Skills, and Employment Affairs and Social Protection – have gathered evidence from advocates and people with disabilities who described how supports provided in schools, universities and training facilities often are reduced or removed once they become jobseekers or enter a new workplace.

Tuesday’s witnesses appearing at noon in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, are officials from the three relevant government departments: Education and Skills, Employment Affairs and Social Protection, and Health.

“We already have gathered significant testimony about gaps in services and funding and are eager to discuss with department officials possible ways to close those gaps,” said John Curran TD, chairman of the Joint Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection, who is leading Tuesday’s meeting. “To be most effective, disability supports need to be provided on a seamless basis.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings also can be viewed live on Android and Apple devices using the Houses of the Oireachtas app.
