Transport Committee to focus on bus corridor proposals and situation regarding disqualified driving licences

19 Meith 2018, 15:55

The impact of Core Bus Corridor proposals and the current situation pertaining to disqualified driving licences will be on the agenda of the Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport when it meets on Wednesday, 20 June 2018.

The agenda for the meeting is:

Impact of the Core Bus Corridor Proposals

•    Anne Graham, CEO, National Transport Authority (NTA)

Current situation pertaining to disqualified driving licences

•    Moyagh Murdock, CEO, Road Safety Authority
•    Dave Sheahan, Assistant Commissioner, Roads Policing & Major Events Management, An Garda Síochána

Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd said: “Proposals for 16 new core bus corridors in Dublin were recently unveiled by the National Transport Authority. While the aim is to improve journey times for Dublin buses and we will all support the need to significantly increase the greater use of public transport, concerns have been raised by some residents along the proposed routes about the potential impact on residential areas including the loss of gardens, parking and footpaths. The Committee will meet with NTA chief executive Anne Graham to examine the plans in more detail.

In the second part of our meeting, we will hear from Road Safety Authority chief executive Moyagh Murdock and representatives from An Garda Síochána in relation to the current situation regarding disqualified driving licences. It was recently revealed that more than 80% of drivers banned from driving did not surrender their licence despite it being an offence. This has implications both for road safety and enforcement and we will consider the matter at our meeting with the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána.”

The Committee will start at 1.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
