Education Committee to focus on provision of ASD & Special Classes in mainstream schools

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills will meet tomorrow, the 26th of June at 3.30pm to discuss the provision of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and special classes in mainstream schools.

The following witnesses will appear:

• Representatives from AsIAm;
• Representatives from Special Needs Parents Association;
• Representatives from National Association of Boards of Management in
• Special Education (NABMSE);
• Representatives from Catholic Primary School Management Association
• (CPSMA);
• Representatives from Joint Managerial Body/Association of Management of
• Catholic Secondary Schools (JMB/AMCSS);
• Representatives from National Council for Special Education (NCSE).

Committee Chair, Fiona O’Loughlin TD, said today, “Every child should be given an equal opportunity to be educated in the environment that suits them best. With this in mind, the Committee prioritised the provision of ASD and Special Classes in mainstream schools in its Work Programme and invited written submissions from a number of stakeholders. Based on these submissions, a number of those were invited to appear before the Committee tomorrow. The Committee is seeking to undertake an examination into the level and impact of the apparent shortages, especially at secondary level.”
