18 MFómh 2018, 16:54

The Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills welcomed representatives of the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) to a reception in Leinster House today, following the awarding of EUCYS titles in Dublin Castle this afternoon.

Ireland’s Simon Meehan was awarded the Expo Sciences Luxembourg prize for his project entitled "Investigation of the antimicrobial effects of both aerial and root parts of selected plants against Staphylococcus aureus."

An initiative of the European Commission under the Science and Society programme, the EUCYS is the annual showcase of the best of European student scientific achievement. All EUCYS participants have previously won first prize in their home country’s national science competition, the equivalent to the BTYSTE in Ireland. Simon Meehan, who was awarded the BT Young Scientist & Technologist of the Year title in January 2018, represented Ireland at the EUCYS this year.

Committee Chair Fiona O’Loughlin TD said, “On behalf of the Committee, I am delighted to welcome the Organisers and Winners of the EU Contest for Young Scientists to Leinster House. Science and technology are vital to Ireland, not only in terms of progressing our credentials in education but also in terms of our continued economic viability as we move towards an ever-increasing innovation-driven economy”.

“It is so encouraging to see EUCYS here in Ireland as it really showcases our credentials in Europe as promotors of science education. The Education Committee wanted to take this opportunity to officially welcome our Member State guests and look to build key connections with the goal of fostering greater integration of cross- border education initiatives.”

Shay Walsh Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) said, “As organisers of the BTYSTE, we are delighted to welcome the EUCYS to Ireland to host one of the most internationally renowned education events in the world. We believe this is a really positive endorsement of Ireland's education system and the amazing talent that continues to emerge. We are delighted to be involved in today’s reception as we believe it is so important to support science education in Ireland and greater collaboration between Members States could be a key component of this.”
