Dr Gabriel Scally to appear before Oireachtas Health Committee

9 DFómh 2018, 11:43

Dr Gabriel Scally, appointed by the Government to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the cervical cancer controversy, will be before the Oireachtas Health Committee tomorrow to discuss the final report of the scoping inquiry into the CervicalCheck Screening Programme.

Speaking today, Committee Chair, Dr Michael Harty TD, said, “Tomorrow’s meeting marks the first time Dr Gabriel Scally will appear before an Oireachtas Committee to discuss his final report into Cervical Check Screening Programme. The meeting is overshadowed by the tragic death of Emma Mhic Mhathúna over the weekend. On behalf of the Committee, I wish to offer my condolences to Emma’s family. She was incredibly courageous in her fight for justice, not just for herself and her children, but for other families affected by the screening controversy.”

“The Committee will question Dr Scally on the main findings of his report, which identified 'serious gaps' in the expertise and governance of the CervicalCheck screening programme. Committee Members will also wish to discuss the ongoing negotiations between the HSE and the two main laboratories that examine smear tests for the CervicalCheck programme.”

The meeting will begin at 9am in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.
