Communications Committee to question RTÉ Director General on Annual Report 2017, Independent Review of Role and Gender Equality Report & review by European Broadcasting Union

16 DFómh 2018, 16:08

Representatives from RTÉ, led by Director General Dee Forbes, will be before the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment tomorrow.

RTÉ will engage with the Committee on their Annual Report 2017; the publication of the independent Gender Role Review report in September 2017; and the Review Report by members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which assessed the management practices of RTÉ, and the quality of the content it provides.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Chair, Hildegarde Naughton TD, said, “Tomorrow’s meeting is a valuable opportunity to engage with RTÉ’s senior management on their latest Annual Report, including on details such as their changed organisational structure; salaries and programming content. Relating to the Gender Equality Report, authored by Kieran Mulvey, Members will question RTE on the steps it is taking to remedy what the report viewed as disproportionate male representation across higher earnings categories of the organisation.”

“The Committee also has a number of questions for RTÉ tomorrow relating to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) report. The report praised aspects of RTÉ’s plans but it also criticised others. Currently, only the Executive Summary of the EBU Peer Review Report is available until such a time as the Government has formally responded to the BAI’s report and recommendations. Committee Members will likely look for more detail on this Review Report.”

The meeting will start at 5pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.
