Justice Committee, farming groups to discuss rural crime

16 DFómh 2018, 10:16

Farming leaders will discuss rural households’ experience of crime and law enforcement on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Joint Committee on Justice and Equality.

The meeting at 9 a.m. in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live here and on Android and Apple devices using the Houses of the Oireachtas app.

The witnesses include

  • Irish Farmers’ Association President Joe Healy, accompanied by IFA Deputy President Richard Kennedy and IFA Crime Prevention Officer Barry Carey, and
  • Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association Rural Development Chair Seamus Sherlock and Operations Manager Laura Starnes.

“As the Committee gathers evidence on the nature, level and impact of rural crime in Ireland today, it is important to hear from representatives with their ears to the ground on the issue,” said Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD.

“Isolated farmers, families and rural dwellers have known on occasion the barbarity that some criminals employ. People should not have to live with fear,” Deputy Ó Caoláin said. “Responding effectively and efficiently to the needs of rural communities is an essential part of the Garda Síochana role today. A much greater level of visibility is needed. People in rural areas need to feel secure in their homes. Sadly, many do not.”

This is the third and final Committee meeting devoted to the topic of rural crime. The Committee expects to publish its report on Community Policing and Rural Crime later this year.
