Employment Affairs and Social Protection Committee to explore rights of semi-state pensioners

24 DFómh 2018, 14:11

The pension rights of retired staff of semi-state organisations will be examined on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Joint Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

The meeting at 10 a.m. in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live here and on Android and Apple devices using the Houses of the Oireachtas app.

Witnesses represent a new umbrella group for retired staff from several semi-state companies. They include

  • Mairéad de Buitléir of the RTÉ Retired Staff Association,
  • Colm Ó Gógáin of the Bord na Móna Retired Staff Association and
  • Matt Kelly of the ESB Retired Staff Association.

“Pensioners of semi-state companies have many grievances about restrictions on their benefits and rights, and the Committee is focused on hearing their experiences,” said Committee Chairman John Curran TD.

“The Committee hopes to be in position soon to deal with the Committee Stage of the Social Welfare, Pensions and Civil Registration Bill 2017,” Deputy Curran said. “These discussions may well inspire ideas for amendments to improve that Bill’s provisions.”
