Communications Committee to hear from Twitter & SIPO on Online Advertising and Social Media (Transparency) Bill

23 Samh 2018, 16:11

The Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment will tomorrow resume its Detailed Scrutiny of the Online Advertising and Social Media (Transparency) Bill 2017, a Private Members Bill (PMB) sponsored by James Lawless TD.

The following witnesses will appear:

• Sherry Perrault, Head of Ethics and Lobbying Regulation - Standards In Public Office (SIPO);
• Karen White, Director, Public Policy, Europe – Twitter.

Committee Chair, Hildegarde Naughton TD, said, “Deputy Lawless’ bill aims to address the problems that surround electoral campaigning and the online environment. It is a sensitive and complex area and the bill calls for greater transparency in the disclosure of information in online political advertising. Representatives from SIPO will engage with the Committee on the implications of the bill on Irish electoral law, while Twitter will provide information on how the bill would affect their policies on online advertising and campaigning.”

The meeting will start at 4pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.
