Health Committee to discuss Lyme disease in Ireland

Scheduled witnesses include

• Representatives from Tick Talk Ireland, a support group encouraging awareness of Lyme disease,
• Dr. John Lambert, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Mater Hospital and UCD School of Medicine, and
• Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn at the Department of Health, accompanied by specialists in infectious diseases.

“Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by the bite of ticks. The accurate diagnosis of chronic Lyme disease, and its official recognition as a chronic illness with multiple symptoms and presentations, have proven challenging to the medical profession. The Committee wishes to explore how these challenges can be overcome,” said Committee Chairman Michael Harty TD.

“The Committee is anxious to hear from Tick Talk Ireland and the Department of Health on how best to develop diagnostic, treatment and care pathways for patients with Lyme disease and to consider the international experience in managing this disease,” Deputy Harty said.
