Joint Committee on Employment Affairs & Social Protection to discuss the topic of Bogus Self Employment

13 Feabh 2019, 09:56

The Joint Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection will meet tomorrow (Thursday) at 10.00 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House to discuss the topic of bogus self employment.

Before Christmas, the Joint Committee began its consideration of the plight of workers in situations of bogus self-employment. It has already heard from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, and has engaged with an ICTU delegation representing several employment sectors.

At tomorrow’s meeting, Professor Michael Doherty of Maynooth University will address the Committee on the topic.

Bogus self employment is a very real problem, with long term implications for those affected,” said Committee Chairman John Curran TD.

Deputy Curran said the Committee will consider methods to deter employers from defining members of their work force as self-employed contractors, against their will and to their detriment.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
