4 Márta 2019, 17:31

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade & Defence will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, at 12.30pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House to discuss two important topics.

Minister Paul Kehoe TD, Minister of State at the Departments of An Taoiseach and Defence with special responsibility for Defence, will attend to update members on the White Paper on Defence.

The Chairman of the Joint Committee, Deputy Brendan Smith, said: “The chance to hear from Minister Kehoe regarding the White Paper on Defence will be a timely opportunity for us all to evaluate progress to-date regarding the resourcing of the Defence Forces.”

Minister Kehoe will attend for Session B, with stakeholders from the international developmental NGO sector to attend for Session A at which the Committee will receive an update on the refugee situation in Syria, and related matters.

In advance of the meeting, the Chairman of the Joint Committee, Deputy Brendan Smith, said: “We look forward to hearing of the reality on the ground in Syria from representatives from Concern, Trócaire and GOAL, as the crisis there intensifies.”

Deputy Brendan Smith added: “The Committee is eager to examine the issues facing the people of Syria, and the challenges which Irish aid organisations in the country are facing.

“With that in mind, all members of the Committee very much welcome the opportunity to hear from those on the frontline, and how we as a Committee can support their work.”
