European Union Affairs Committee welcomes EU-UK progress

12 Márta 2019, 14:08

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs has welcomed the publication of new documents between the EU and United Kingdom as capable of offering a positive way forward and reducing the risk of a disorderly no-deal Brexit.

“Prime Minister May’s meeting with President Juncker last night has produced significant steps that I hope will provide the reassurance and confidence needed to address concerns, especially those held by many members of the British Parliament, to support the draft Withdrawal Agreement,” said Committee Chairman Michael Healy-Rae TD.

“We are all going through the complex detail of these new documents now. But my first impression is that the commitments made are substantive, while maintaining the essential elements of the draft Withdrawal Agreement,” Deputy Healy-Rae said.

“It is important that we all agree on how to move forward over the next few weeks. Confirming the certainty of a two-year transition period is vital for so many businesses and citizens,” he said. “A green light on this would allow us all to move to the next phase of developing a strong future relationship between the UK and the European Union.”
