Joint Committee on Employment Affairs & Social Protection to discuss the Pensions Bill

8 Beal 2019, 09:56

The Joint Committee on Employment Affairs and Social Protection will meet tomorrow, Thursday, to discuss the Pensions Bill with IBEC and the Pensions Council.

IBEC and the Pensions Council will appear before the Committee on Thursday in Committee Room 4 at 10.30am.

In advance of these discussions, Committee Chairman John Curran TD said: “The Committee looks forward to continuig our detailed scrutiny of the Pensions Amendment (No 2) Bill 2017.”

The function of the The Pensions Council is to advise the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection on matters relating to policy on pensions. The Council represents and protects the consumer interest and helps to ensure that the system has a far stronger consumer focus.

Ibec is Ireland's largest lobby group representing Irish business both domestically and internationally. Its membership is home grown, multinational, big and small, spanning every sector of the economy. Together they employ over 70% of the private sector workforce in Ireland.

Deputy Curran added: “The perspective of The Pensions Council and IBEC is most welcome, especially in light of the publication of last years ‘Roadmap for Pensions Reform, 2018-2023’, comprised of specific measures to modernise our pension system, from a New Automatic Enrolment Savings System to measures to support the operation of Defined Benefit Schemes, and much more. We must continue to protect the living standards of our current, and future, pensioners.”
