Dr Gabriel Scally to appear before Oireachtas Health Committee

3 Iúil 2019, 14:57

Dr Gabriel Scally, will appear before the Oireachtas Health Committee tomorrow, Thursday, 4 July to discuss his second report into the CervicalCheck Screening Programme

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1, Leinster House  at 2.15pm and can be viewed live here.

Dr Scally’s Supplementary Report of the Scoping Inquiry into the CervicalCheck Programme was published last month.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee chairman, Dr Michael Harty TD said: “We very much welcome Dr Scally to the Committee again. His recent report revealed the number of labs involved in CervicalCheck work was in fact 16 and not 6 as he was informed in May of last year. The use of many of these laboratories in the US and UK for CervicalCheck screening was not approved by the HSE/National Screening Service as was required under the various contracts concerned. Nor was the use of these labs known by the HSE/National screening Service.

“Members are eager to question Dr Scally further about the implications of his findings and the current situation within the screening programme.”

Dr Scally was appointed by the Government to conduct the inquiry into the cervical cancer controversy, last year. His first report into the problems surrounding the cervical screening service in Ireland was published in September 2018.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
