“ESB Leaks” hearings begin before Oireachtas Communications Committee

The Oireachtas Communications Committee will begin hearings on the ESB oil leaks revealed in a recent RTE documentary in Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday 9 July at 3pm.

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) will appear before TDs and Senators tomorrow in Committee Room 2 at 3pm to discuss the RTE investigates: ESB Leaks programme which aired on 5 June 2019.

ESB worker Seamus O'Loughlin, who made a series of protected disclosures to the Environment Minister last year about the ESB,will appear before the Committee on Wednesday, 10 July, Committee Room 3 at 5pm and representatives from the ESB will appear at 8 p.m.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment chairperson, Hildegarde Naughton TD described the oil leaks as “very worrying.”

Deputy Naughton: “We will be holding a series of hearings on this issue. Tomorrow we will get a chance to hear Ireland’s independent energy regulator, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) on this issue. It has a range of responsibilities including customer protection and safety.

“On Wednesday we will hear from Mr. O’Loughlin in relation to the protected disclosures he has made and we will also get an opportunity to hear from the ESB and question representatives about the health, safety and environmental issues raised in the documentary.”
