8 Iúil 2019, 15:55

Officials from Tusla and two Government Departments are due before the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs tomorrow, Tuesday, 9 July at 1pm in Committee Room 1 to discuss the impact of homelessness on children.

Tusla’s Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Jim Gibson is due to outline the Child and Family Agency’s work in supporting children, parents and communities in dealing with the impact of homelessness on children.

Officials from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and officials and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government will also attend the hearing to outline their roles and work in the area of child homelessness.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee on Children and Youth Affairs Chairman, Mr. Alan Farrell TD said: “We welcome Tusla and officials from both Government Departments to the hearings on the impact of homelessness on children. The last homelessness report published showed there were 1,720 homeless families which includes almost 3,800 children and dependants. We, as a State, have a responsibility to protect all our children in every manner possible.

“We look forward to hearing the details of the policies and frameworks in place, and the measures planned to address child homelessness, but we also want to hear about the supports being provided, including educational and emotional supports, for children affected by homelessness.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
