An Post to appear before the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment to discuss post office and Cork mail centre closures

16 MFómh 2019, 15:55

An Post will discuss the closure of its mail centre in Cork and the future of the post office network at a meeting of the Oireachtas Communications Committee tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 September in Leinster House, Committee Room 2 at 3p.m.

The company announced, in July, that it is closing its letter sorting centre in Little Island, Co Cork with the loss of 216 jobs. It followed confirmation from the company last year that it intended to close 159 post offices as part of restructuring plans.

An Post Chief executive, David McRedmond is scheduled to address the closures when he appears before TDs and Senators, tomorrow.

Chairperson of the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “We understand the need for An Post to diversify, as people move away from traditional mail but the post office is still an important part of the social fabric, for many communities.

“Tomorrow’s meeting is a welcome opportunity for us to get further details surrounding the closures, an update on the company’s restructuring plans and how it intends to expand and grow its services in the current market.”

The meeting which takes place in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live here.
