Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism & Sport to discuss Regional and National tourism

1 DFómh 2019, 16:09

The Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism & Sport will meet tomorrow, Wednesday with three organisations appearing to discuss matters related to tourism.

The meetings commence in Committee Room 4, Leinster House from 10.30am with three witnesses due before the committee, as the Committee continues its discussion of the National Development Plan. Chair Designates from the Shannon Group, Fáilte Ireland and the Port of Waterford will attend.

Shannon Group is an umbrella organisation for four businesses who are focused on delivering economic benefits for the Shannon/Limerick area, the West of Ireland and the wider national economy.

The member organisations include, the Shannon Airport Authority, Shannon Heritage, Shannon Properties and Shannon IASC (International Aviation Services Centre).

For its part, the Port of Waterford is a major cargo gateway to the South East Region, located eight kilometres from the City, while the perspective of Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority of Ireland, will be invaluable, as Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd TD said.

Chairman of the Joint Committee, Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd TD said: “It is clear that Brexit in a little over four weeks’ time poses challenges for many in the broader transport and tourism sector, and Wednesday’s meeting will also give us an insight into the opportunities which also exist.

“The Shannon and Waterford Regions are of key strategic importance to our trade, transport and tourism, and similarly we look forward to engaging with Fáilte Ireland on the broader picture regarding tourism”, added Deputy O’Dowd.
