10 DFómh 2019, 16:43

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Petitions today welcomed a delegation of senior officials from China to Leinster House.

Led by Mr Li Zhiyong, Chairman of the Committee of Proposals of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Chinese delegation was greeted on behalf of the Joint Committee by members Senator Jerry Buttimer and Deputy Eugene Murphy.

Mr Li and his colleagues are in Ireland to learn about the mechanisms, procedures and methods the Government and the Oireachtas use to collect and reflect public opinion.

Welcoming Mr Li and his colleagues to Ireland and to the Oireachtas on behalf of the Joint Committee on Public Petitions, Senator Buttimer said that this year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and China.

“I’m pleased to say that relations between our countries have never been better and continue to deepen,” Senator Buttimer said.

Senator Buttimer added that he and Deputy Murphy were very happy to share the experiences of the Joint Committee on Public Petitions on engaging with public opinion in Ireland with Mr Li and his colleagues.
