Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government to discuss latent defects in homes and deposit protection scheme

6 Samh 2019, 17:14

The Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government will meet tomorrow (Thursday) with representatives of the Construction Defects Alliance to discuss latent defects in apartment and housing developments.

The meeting from 9.30am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House will also see a separate engagement with representatives of Threshold, the Social Finance Foundation (SFF) and the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) on proposals for a deposit protection scheme.

Ahead of the meeting, Committee Chairman Noel Rock TD said: “Two years ago this Committee published its Safe as Houses? following the discovery significant construction defects at Priory Hall and other housing developments in Dublin. Members look forward to engaging with the Construction Defects Alliance, which represents affected home owners and owner management companies.

"We are particularly interested in hearing how the recommendations of our report are being implemented to bring relief to the thousands of families left with crippling financial burdens due to construction defects in their homes, in many cases built by developers who have since gone bust. The Committee will also examine the proposal for a deposit protection scheme for tenants and looks forward to hearing the views of Threshold, the SFF and RTB.”
