Committee on Budgetary Oversight to hold post-budget engagement with the Minister

The Committee on Budgetary Oversight will tomorrow conduct a post-budget engagement with the Minister five weeks after Budget 2020 was unveiled.

Topics likely to be raised with the Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, TD include the timeliness and quality of budget information, demographic demand and control of costs in areas such as health and social protection.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chairman Colm Brophy TD, said: “Since October 8, the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service has published a number of supplementary budget documents and Spending Review papers. These are also in addition to a range of other papers published in advance of the Budget.”

“The Committee are very much aware of the importance of managing emerging risks arising from demographic pressures, but we will also be using the opportunity to discuss how all of this material has been incorporated into the Budget process. The Committee will also discuss improvements that can be made to budget information to enable improved parliamentary scrutiny.”

With specific reference to the Spending Review, the three-year cycle of papers which set out to holistically evaluate the totality of public expenditure, Mr. Brophy added; “The Committee will also discuss the future of the Spending Review process and reflect on the success of the first three year cycle.”
