Climate Action Committee to discuss Ireland’s support for a ‘Just Transition’

12 Samh 2019, 03:25

The Joint Committee on Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, to discuss supporting a Just Transition.

'Just Transition’ is a key part of Climate Action policy, the idea that communities and individuals are safeguarded in the move to face the challenges faced by climate change, in a climate-proofed economy.

Representatives from Offaly County Council, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and officials from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation will attend.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Hildegarde Naughton TD, said: “Earlier this year, the Committee called for a series of measures to support workers in terms of education and training options to support a Just Transition. The Committee is committed to this plan, as it is an integral part of supporting communities traditionally reliant on industry which was carbon-intensive.

“The development of sustainable jobs, infrastructure and up-skilling is something which the Committee believes in strongly. The provision of job opportunities in the new, low-carbon, economy will be vital in ensuring a just transition in the fastest and fairest way possible.”

The meeting will start at 2pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House. Watch live
