PAC to examine matters related to the Charities Regulatory Authority tomorrow morning and the use of Carbon Tax in afternoon

The focus of the PAC’s examination with the Charities Regulatory Authority will be the Authority’s 2018 financial statements.

The primary role of the Charities Regulator is to establish and maintain a public register of charitable organisations operating in Ireland and ensure their compliance with the Charities Acts.

The Regulator’s sole income in 2018 was an Oireachtas grant of €3.96m from the Department of Rural and Community Development. The Regulator spent €3.68m which included staff costs of €2.13m and general administration costs of €1.46m.

Tomorrow afternoon, from 2.30pm, the PAC will meet with officials from the Department of Communications Climate Action and Environment to discuss a chapter from the C&AG’s 2018 report on greenhouse gas related financial transactions and the general matter of carbon taxation.

Chairman of the PAC, Seán Fleming TD, said: “In the morning session, the Committee will examine matters relating to the 2018 financial statements of the Charities Regulatory Authority, and how the Authority exercises its regulatory role in regard to the 10,370 charities under its remit.

“In our second session we will engage with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment to  fully understand the extent of the use of carbon and how tax collected since 2010 has been utilised to support measures to reduce carbon emissions.”
