Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism & Sport notes presentation of 2018 FAI Accounts

6 Noll 2019, 16:13

The Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport notes today’s presentation of the 2018 accounts of the Football Association of Ireland, and will engage with the FAI, Sport Ireland, and the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport in the coming weeks.

Chairman of the Joint Committee, Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd TD, said: “The revelation that there are net current liabilities of €55,067,472 is deeply concerning, as is the potential impact of these figures on grassroots soccer across the country. The volunteers and young people who strive to promote the game in clubs and communities are in our thoughts today along with the staff in Abbotstown and across the country.”

Deputy O’Dowd added:The 2018 deficit of €8.9 million, and matters related to previous years is deeply shocking. Today’s presentation of the accounts poses even more questions in relation to governance. Having initially highlighted issues related to governance at the FAI earlier this year, the Committee is committed to continuing to shine a light on the Association.

“Committee member and Senator Pádraig Ó Céidigh has requested an emergency meeting of the Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism & Sport without delay in order to discuss the FAI, and we will meet next week to discuss this matter, one which is of great public interest. The Committee intends to invite the FAI, Sport Ireland and Minister Ross before the Committee as soon as possible.”
