RTÉ Director General before Oireachtas Communications Committee to discuss funding of public service broadcasting

9 Noll 2019, 17:25

RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes will appear before the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment tomorrow, Tuesday, to discuss future funding of public service broadcasting.

The meeting takes place in Leinster House, Committee Room 2 at 3pm.

Officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, RTÉ’s Chief Financial Officer Breda O’Keeffe, Director of Strategy Rory Coveney and Director of Human Resources Eimear Cusack will also appear before the Committee.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chair Deputy Hildegarde Naughton said: “Our Committee believes that the provision of balanced, impartial, well resourced and independent public broadcasting services is fundamental to our democratic society especially since the advent of ‘fake news’.

“We completed a comprehensive report in 2017 and made recommendations relating to the funding of public service broadcasting, to ensure its future. We are revisiting this issue again tomorrow. In addition, RTÉ recently announced cost-cutting plans involving staff and service cuts. We welcome this opportunity to discuss these plans and the future of the broadcaster in terms of funding.”
