The Joint Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will meet tomorrow to discuss Government Plans for Commemorative Events 2020-2023 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House from 1.30pm.
Representatives from The Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations, Officials from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Representatives from Tipperary County Council will appear.
The role of the Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations is to advise the Government on historical matters relating to the Decade of Centenaries, and to consult widely with academic, community and voluntary groups and members of the public to ensure that significant events are commemorated accurately, proportionately and appropriately in tone.
Committee Chair, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, said, “The Committee is keen to explore Government Plans for Commemorative Events during the period 2020-2023, Wednesday’s meeting is an opportunity to discuss this important topic.”
Earlier this year, the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht outlined how the government plans to approach the development of an appropriate programme to mark the remainder of the Decade of Centenaries. This plan was outlined in the Second Phase Guidance of the Expert Advisory Group.
Deputy Ó Laoghaire added: “This Programme will be based on a four strand approach comprising a community strand, which will involve a collaborative approach – similar to that adopted for the 1916 centenary commemorations – between the State, local authority network and community organisations.”
“It is essential in particular, that these commemorative events reach in to every home in Ireland, and are led by the Community. We must explore how the state can best support community organisations in commemorating and remembering this crucial and formative period.”
“The revolutionary period shaped the Ireland of today, and the commemorations, discussions and debates we will have over the coming three years deserve to be major events.”
