27 Ean 2020, 10:17

Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the late Séamus Mallon as his passing is marked at the Houses of the Oireachtas.

As a mark of respect, the Tricolour is flying at half-mast over Leinster House today, after the former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister and deputy leader of the SDLP passed away aged 83 on Friday. Mr Mallon will be laid to rest today.

The Ceann Comhairle said: “The legacy which Séamus Mallon has left is immense; he played a key role in the peace process, culminating in the Good Friday Agreement.  Leinster House offers its parliamentary support to the family, friends and former colleagues of Séamus Mallon at this sad time.

“Now more than ever it is important that the peace process is nurtured and supported. We must continue Séamus’s work by building upon and continuing to safeguard the peace which the Good Friday Agreement delivered upon, and we mourn the loss of a great Irishman.”
