Committee on Covid-19 Response to discuss fiscal position

The Oireachtas Special Committee on Covid-19 Response will hear from officials from the Central Bank of Ireland and National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) when it meets tomorrow morning, Tuesday, 7 July, in Leinster House.

The Committee will focus on the State’s overall fiscal position, at its first session. TDs will then resume the discussion on the re-opening of schools, when the Committee hears from officials from school principal representative groups, in its second session.

  • Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, Gabriel Makhlouf and NTMA Funding and Debt Management Director Frank O’Connor will appear before the Committee at 9am.
  • Irish Primary Principals Network, President Damien White, Irish Primary Principals Network, Chief Executive Páiric Clerkin, National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, President Alan Mongey, and National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, Deputy Director Paul Byrne will appear before the Committee at 11.30am.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman, Michael McNamara TD said: “As the economy continues to re-open and restrictions are eased, the Committee welcomes the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, Gabriel Makhlouf and Frank O’Connor from the National Treasury Management Agency to discuss the financial implications of Covid-19 and the measures being taken to ensure financial support and provide stability to Ireland’s economy.

“The Committee will also resume its discussion on education provision in the changed environment. We look forward to hearing from groups representing school principals, both primary and post primary, on the supports needed, including staffing and transport, to ensure the safe re-opening of schools in September.”

The witnesses will appear in the Dáil Chamber and by video link from Committee Room 1.
