Oireachtas Covid-19 Committee to discuss community transmission of Covid - 19

The Oireachtas Committee on Covid-19 Response will examine strategic options for using the Government Plan to eliminate community transmission of Covid - 19 in Ireland when it meets tomorrow.

Wednesday’s meeting in Leinster House will meet in separate settings, with the following witnesses due to appear, from 10am.

    • Dr Johann Giesecke, former Chief Epidemiologist, Sweden, Former Chief Scientist, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Infectious Hazards WHO
    • Professor Samuel McConkey, Head of the Department of International Health and Tropical Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Consultant in General Medicine and Tropical Diseases at Beaumont Hospital
    • Professor Tomás Ryan, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Trinity Institute of Neurosciences, TCD
    • Professor Kirsten Schaffer, UCD School of Medicine, President of Irish Society of Clinical Microbiologists, Consultant at St Vincent’s University Hospital

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Michael McNamara TD said: “Following on from two intensive days of engagement on the topics of nursing homes and the impact of the pandemic on sport last week, Wednesday’s meeting will look at the topic of community transmission of Covid-19.

“Tomorrows meeting will provide the Committee with the opportunity to explore how, as winter approaches, the options which our country has to utilise the  Government Plan to eliminate community transmission of Covid - 19 in Ireland.

“In light of the impact of the pandemic on every aspect of life in Dublin and beyond, the reality of community transmission of Covid is having a major effect. As the case numbers increase, it is important to assess the challenges which we face as a country and also assess the measures which may mitigate against this.

Mr McNamara added: “As approved by the Oireachtas Business Committee, the proposed sessions involving the HSE/HSPC, the acting CMO/NPHET and the Minister for Health are being rescheduled to a convenient date.”
